Corners and long pieces deserve attention
Lead expands and contracts. Splits often appear where a long piece has been over-fixed or pulled tight around a corner.
Check the joint above the lead
The chase or pointing can open while the sheet remains sound. Both parts need inspecting.
Temporary coatings are not the same as leadwork
Mastic and bitumen may help in an emergency, but repeated surface coating hides the original laps and makes later repair harder.
